Getting used to Restorative Practice

‘Getting used to Restorative Practice,’ is an introductory course, available face-to-face and online, to primary and secondary school teachers, (including management, SNAs and auxiliary staff.) The course focuses mainly on Restorative Values, Emotional Intelligence, Restorative Language and Restorative Conversations.

Some time will also be spent, providing an overview and giving participants the opportunity, to practice using Restorative Circles and observe a Restorative Meeting. 

Restorative Practices (RP) are both a philosophy and a set of skills that aim to support both the building of strong(er) relationships and, to transform conflict, in a simple and emotionally healthy manner.

This course will, therefore:

• Provide participants with the knowledge and understanding to begin using the basic elements of RP in their work in schools.
• Encourage participants to start using RP to support their teaching practice and life outside the classroom;
• Inspire and enable participants to begin using essential restorative skills in their work and life.

Andy Battell

Andy worked for many years as a Training Consultant with both the NHS and Social Services in the London and South-East England areas. He devised and delivered training, to staff working with people with learning disabilities, and worked directly with service users themselves. Using pro-active approaches, he also coached and mentored staff to support service users, who displayed behaviour that seriously challenged services.

After moving to Waterford in 1999, Andy managed The Pathways Project for 11 years, with the Waterford & South Tipperary Community Youth Service, providing mentoring support and Progression Programmes to Early School Leavers. He then managed the School Completion Programme (SCP) na Siúire, in Waterford City and South Kilkenny, for 7 years.

In 2011, Andy became a Certified Trainer, with the International Institute of Restorative Practice (IIRP) and in 2016, a Certified Trainer of Trainers. In 2014, he co-founded the Waterford Restorative Practice Network.

Andy joined the Childhood Development Initiative in 2017, as an RP Quality Specialist and has facilitated all CDI’s training, and training of trainers’ courses, both face-to-face and online; notably, with a number of schools in Munster. Between 2019 and 2021, he was involved in the writing, co-delivery and assessment, of an online Professional Training (EQF Level 5 - QQI Level 6,) in Restorative Practices (TReP) course, as part of an Erasmus+ Programme.

Since 2012, Andy has also, devised and delivered a number of QQI Level 4, 5 and 6 courses, with asylum seekers and refugees, in Waterford City and currently works with the Mukisa Project.

This is a 12-hour Online course limited to 18 participants. Please make sure you are able to attend all of the dates below before registering.
