If you are looking for an exciting new resource to use with TY students or incorporate into your school’s Wellbeing or Career Guidance Programme, during the 2021/2022 academic year, look no further!

The BFiresafe@school Fire Education Programme is free, easy to use, requires no previous knowledge, and is supported by an extensive bank of resources which will provide you with everything that you need in order to deliver the programme easily and efficiently. It is suitable for use with students aged 12 – 19 years.

There are 10 Units in total, but you can pick and choose which units you cover to suit your time allocation and the interests of your students.  This Programme was designed by an Irish project group in collaboration with the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage. The content has been created using the expertise of Fire Personnel under the direction of Mr Finian Joyce, Chief Fire Officer, Leitrim County Council, with guidance from Ms. Caroline McHale (Education Consultant) and with input from teachers. It has been successfully piloted in a number of post primary schools in Ireland and is now being offered to schools both nationally and internationally.

The programme content includes the following:

Unit 1: Managing Myself

Unit 6: Fire Safety in the Home

Unit 2: Fire Science

Unit 7: Fire Safety in Schools

Unit 3: Fire Safety Indicators

Unit 8: Fire Safety in your Environment

Unit 4: Case Studies

Unit 9: Emergency Action Plans

Unit 5: Calling the Emergency Services.

Unit 10:Careers in Fire

The Programme offers plenty of opportunities for active learning and the use of digital technology. Students complete short online assessments and certification is available.

It is available in 10 languages and is being adopted in schools across Europe, which offers exciting opportunities for collaboration using eTwinning.  The programme is cross curricular in nature with links to Science and Career Guidance. It could also be a very valuable addition to a school Wellbeing Programme and may be of interest to Modern Language teachers as well. So please share with colleagues within your school, who you think may be interested.

If you wish to get some sense of what the programme is about, check out the BFireSafe@school website at www.bfiresafeatschool.eu where you can register as a teacher and view the content.
