Active School Flag

Active School Flag (ASF) is a Department of Education and Skills initiative, supported by Healthy Ireland, and based in Mayo Education Centre. The goal of the initiative is to get more schools, more active, more often. The flag is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community.

In order to achieve the flag schools must:

Step 1

Schools that have decided to work towards the ASF must register online at www.activeschoolflag.ie to create a school account

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to generate whole school reflection and discussion in relation to physical education, physical activity and partnerships.

Step 3

All schools, new applicants and renewal schools, are advised to attend the ASF training events that are scheduled every year. Teachers that attend the training events will receive ASF resources to help them to implement the process in their schools.

See below for further information

Step 4

ASF provides schools with a definite set of targets (success criteria) to work towards for each of the following four areas:

  • Physical Education
  • Physical Activity
  • Partnerships
  • Active School Week

Schools are asked to showcase the work that they are doing by creating and ASF section on their school website.

Step 5

Every submitted application form and accompanying ASF website section will be reviewed by the screening committee to assess readiness for an accreditation visit

Step 6

An ASF accreditor, on an agreed date, will visit schools that have been approved by the screening committee. The purpose of this visit is to:

  • Verify that schools are meeting ALL of the ASF success criteria
  • Meet and acknowledge the efforts of the ASF coordinator(s), committee and everyone else that contributed to the process.

Step 7

Once awarded the ASF remains valid for a period of 3 years. Schools that renew their ASF receive a darker version of the flag.
