Hidden Figures and Big Ideas: Teaching TY Maths Through History

maths cop 6 nov poster

TY Maths offers a unique opportunity to show students that maths is more than a subject but a story woven through every culture, continent, and century.

This webinar will explore how to use the history of mathematics to enrich TY learning by:

  • Humanising maths through storytelling and historical context
  • Highlighting global contributions to mathematics, including:
    • Ancient Indian developments in number systems and zero
    • Chinese methods in algebra and geometry
    • African fractals, pattern systems, and early counting techniques
  • Exploring the role of women in mathematics from Hypatia to Maryam Mirzakhani  and connecting their work to concepts on the curriculum
  • Demonstrating how these diverse perspectives can:
    • Boost engagement and interest in maths as a subject
    • Build cultural awareness and challenge stereotypes
    • Support curriculum links (e.g. patterns, algebra, number systems, proof, logic)
