Community of Practice: Forensic Science as a Tool for Teaching Science

Overview:
This multi-session series is designed to equip teachers with hands-on, investigative strategies using forensic science to reinforce core concepts in biology, chemistry, and physics. Each session includes practical demos, simulations, and classroom-ready ideas rooted in the real scientific method and cross-disciplinary applications.

In this session, we will explore how to go beyond theory with accessible, engaging DNA analysis. In this session, you’ll learn how to teach gel electrophoresis and genetic fingerprinting using free online simulations and case studies. Build links between TY, JC genetics, and Leaving Cert DNA structure, inheritance, and biotechnology, while giving students insight into real-world lab science.
